Kampong Chhnang has a history and culture of pottery making. Although they use old techniques of making the earthenware, brokers strike a hard bargain for the goods, meaning low incomes for the producers. The adults of the village go to Phnom Penh or overseas to earn a living. This work has been traditionally carried out by women, and it was the project lead, Ms. Yamazaki, and others from Tochigi Prefecture that set out to help improve the quality of their ceramics through training programs made by Mashiko experts.

Nowadays, Kampong Chhnang Pottery is familiar to many, a new brand of earthenware and glazed pottery that uses natural ingredients. However, as only natural ingredients are used, a stable supply is not available, making it hard to constantly produce top quality. Although it is still a case of trial and error, Ms. Yamazaki is delighted that the locals are taking pride in their goods, and customers are proud to buy the pottery. Ms. Yamazaki talks about her future outlook, “We’d like to further our branding efforts and have the pottery recognized as pieces of Cambodian artwork.”
