Japanese firms are making inroads in Cambodia. As of May 2018 there are 257 member groups in JBAC – a 5-fold increase in 8 years. There are also many companies sending local employees to Japan for training; those employees can learn skills and work standards to utilize them in Cambodia when they return. Japanese skills, services and management know how are starting to be used in Cambodia.

“I want to teach a lot of people how to swim by using the teachings I received in Japan”, says Ms. SOM Ousarh. She teaches swimming to Cambodian kids at GUNZE SPORTS JAPAN AEON MALL Sen Sok City. The classes are similar to those in Japan. Ms. Ousarh is not only a swimming coach but also a manager of the operations of the pool. GUNZE SPORTS CO., LTD. (HQ in Hyogo Prefecture), a Japanese company operating about
20 stores of the sport club in Japan, moved into Cambodia in 2015. And they have opened their 1st store in Phnom Penh in 2017, and the 2nd one at “AEON MALL Sen Sok City” has opened in this year. Mr Okuyama, president of GUNZE SPORTS (CAMBODIA) CO., LTD. explains that Ms. Ousarh is one of the 4 staff sent to Japan for training before opening. The training was not only the program to become a coach of swimming, or instructors of yoga and gym, but also for learning sports club management and hospitality that the company has been cultivated throughout their more than 30 years experiences in Japan. The 4 who undertook the induction training are now managers of the clubs as well instructing/coaching.
