Along with Cambodia’s economic growth, the employment situation has also had many changes. The types of job openings have increased, while companies’ needs and applicants’ choices are broadening. National Employment Agency of the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training established a job center that introduces employment to individuals for free; this is their 6th year in operation.
The center matches applicants and companies, holds job fairs, seminars, and information services for employment. From the opening to May of this year 45,811 people have registered and 8,732 have been matched to jobs. This shows good results, but the director of the center, Mr. AING Pheareak expresses wanting more people to know about and make use of the center.
Applicants can register from 16 years old. There is no particular upper age limit, but due to health problems, most companies prefer those of a younger generation, making it difficult for individuals over 50 to find jobs. Recruitment for electrical and mechanical engineers has increased, but businesses are not finding the talent they are looking for. Most recruiting now is in the manufacturing industry, as well as finance, marketing, and hotel customer services.
Within the applicants there are those with high capabilities and skill, on the other hand those that don’t know what they want to do or suddenly cancel interviews are not so few. Due to this, the center holds seminars for high school students that emphasize choosing a job that you are interested in, this way the younger generation can change their way of thinking.
After going to and registering at the center, applicants are given counselling by staff and look for a job based on job type and skill. For and office job, English and comuputer skills are required.
There are 9 job center locations in Cambodia. Inclusing Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampot and Svay Rieng.
People are taught basics such as how to look for a job, how to write a resume, and what to do in an interview. There seems to be many people who don’t know this kind of information.
Applicants can use the lobby computer for free to research job offer information. The younger generation mainly use their smartphones to look for jobs.
There are many positive opinions from seminar participants such as, “I was glad to learn something new”, “I want to improve myself”, and “Being able to exchange ideas with friends I made at the seminar was very helpful”.
Still a small variety, but there is also a library with books related to career and business. You can read the books there or check them out to borrow.
