Dog meat is sold in many districts of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, and these mythical dishes seem to be popular especially among male customers who drink liquor.
In fact, the number of dog meat sellers has been increasing for the last decade.
Dog meat is believed to be nutritious, medicinal, and cheaper than other types of meat.Unlike other countries, there are not many animal-rights activists protesting against eating dog meat in Cambodia.
However dog meat is not for everyone, some people think that dogs are pets and they should not be sold as food.
A dog meat vendor whom we interviewed did not allow us to show their name, but told that they were in this business for the last 5 years.
Their purchase price of dog meat is 18,000 riel per kg, while the selling price is between 5,000 riel and 6,000 riel per dish.
Their menu includes grilled meat, curry soup, sour soup, and house-made sausage.
Regular customers are taxi drivers, other street vendors, and students.
Dog meat dealers usually purchase dogs from villages outside of Phnom Penh.
Since most dog owners believe selling dogs will bring bad luck, they do not accept cash.
Instead dealers offer seasonings, kitchen utensils, etc. to “exchange”.
I personally never ate dog meat before, and it is difficult to see dogs as food.
