There is a big difference in scenery between Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia and the countryside.
When I think about the countryside, one indispensable item comes to mind, that is a CHARCOAL STOVE. It may be small, but can perform a wide range of tasks like grilling, boiling, and simmering, it’s the main culinary power in rural areas where there is no gas.
Depending on the size and type, prices range from 1.25 to 6.50USD, and such reasonable prices add appeal.
This charcoal stove is made in Kampong Chhnang Province.
This is a place famous for producing terracotta (unglazed pottery); not only charcoal stoves, but many different items such as pots for cooking and earthenware containers are handmade here. According to a man who sells terracotta, it seems many families even in Phnom Penh, where there is gas and electricity, still have a charcoal stove as food made this way is said to just taste better.
On the other hand, he also said, “There are many busy people in the city to whom making a fire and then having to keep an eye on the grill the entire time, is just too much trouble to deal with for them”.
He seems to feel the change of the lifestyle to be taking place in Phnom Penh.
