Changes in Regional Areas
Changes in Regional Areas

Can you guess where this café is? No, it’s not the capital Phnom Penh or the tourist attraction Siem Reap. It’s actually in a country area along National Highway 4.

While travelling by bus from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville we stopped for short break.

I was shocked when I first set eyes on this trendy café at a service area.

Inside, there were many foreigners who got off the bus and it just like a European café.

Crucially, the toilets are clean and even include a baby changing table.

Service area locations in Cambodia generally have a local feel, with souvenir shops and fruiterers, and toilets where water has to be poured by bucketing water by hand.

That image may a thing of the past soon.

Having lived in Cambodia for 10 years, I often hear, “You must have seen Cambodia really change”, to which my answer is often to say, “The urban areas”. However, the truth is rural areas such as Poipet (featured in the last issue) are also experiencing the waves of change.
