Kroma Clothes Shop is a boutique in Phnom Penh, in conjunction with the Cambodia-Japan Friendship Skills Training Center established in 1991 that has 3 sectors; printing, woodworking and sewing. The shop has opened in 1996, to both learn sewing skills, and starting to generate an income. The center had previously been supported by Japan’s ODA and Japanese NGO, but now operates independently, and its revenues even contribute to operating funds. The sewing classes for 3 months accepts students with no course fee, and it teachs practical techniques such as how to draw up patterns and how to use sewing machines. After completing their course, students make practical use of the skills gained by making clothes for family or starting a business, and some end up working in the center.
The shop sells original in-house made clothes and accessories, made with Cambodian silks, as well as accepting custom-made orders. A wide range of custom items are available, including clothes and bags, made to suit your tastes and size. Central to shop operations are the veteran employees. With an established reputation for rich experience and high accuracy, orders have been made not just for individuals, but also for many top apparel brands.
Although not widely promoted, to those in the know around Phnom Penh, this is an establishment known for high quality. At a place with a homely feel, why not try out a custom-made piece from one of these skilled artisans.
Creation of an item of made-tomeasure clothing. Each part is measured and carefully crafted. The sewing costs about $20~ for shirts and trousers (materials extra, costs depend on size, design, etc.). To use for your custom-order, you can buy cloth at this shop, or the shop accepts to bring your own.
The shop displays attractive going out clothes like silk dresses and bags, as well as more ordinary items like shirts and cushions… etc. Many items use Cambodian silk and Kroma making them ideal as souvenirs. Materials are also available for purchase.
Following Monivong Blvd., after crossing the intersection of Mao Tse Toung Blvd. head south, you can find Boeung Trobaek High School, and to the south of that, this signboard can be seen. The center’s name is written on the wall outside.
This is the building for the sewing sector – containing the sewing workshop and classrooms, shop, and office. The shop is on the ground floor.
The sewing classes are based on practical teaching. The lecturers are former graduates of the center, giving detailed instruction on drawing patterns, cutting material, and teaching how to use sewing machines so students can work independently after graduating.
