Why do people work? The answer of the Cambodian people is simple and clear. ‘That’s for living and eating!’ Their word for ‘to work’ is KAROSSI or looking for a job to get something to eat. Have you thought of the purpose of working for yourself?
Make keys, Keeping Up with the Times
“The key” is important to live in Cambodia. People usually use many kinds of key to lock their house for security. Because people have a lot of keys by themselves, there must be necessity of locksmith when people loss or move out. Therefore, you can easily find locksmith anywhere in Cambodia.
Chum Sarith, from Kampong Cham province, has worked for three years as a locksmith. Although he was an electrician before, he shifted his job to current one on 2015 because he wanted to do his own business. He could get a skill to make a key easily because he is used
to work by his hands.
The reason I chose a locksmith is I have been interested in craftsmanship since I was a kid. In addition, I thought that locksmith is not too hard to be, but it doesn’t mean everyone can master these specific skills quickly. Because locksmith is so important in Cambodian dairy life, I thought Cambodian people need locksmith at that time. He can make everything related to a key. You can get one house key by 10,000 riel and car key by around 30,000 riel from him. If you want him to come to your house, you need extra money based on where you are, but if it is not that far, you don’t need it.
He is focusing on working as quick as possible, so he got a regular customer. He could earn from $20 to $60 per a day but sometimes got only $15. Because he pays $15 for materials in a day and $100 for a rental working place, his life is not like his looks like. “Even though I satisfy my current income, I want to work and study harder. Because a key is getting more complicated, I have to learn it.”
Furthermore, he has another diffi culty, an electronic key. “An electronic key is recently getting popular, so I might lose my job near the future because an electronic key is totally diff erent from a regular key.”
Although he aff ords to have a disciple now, he feels frustrated from the fl ow of the time. Traditional business style is going to be changed in Cambodia even though you feel like they exist forever.
