Angkor Cookies was started in Siem Reap in 2004 out of the idea of providing a workplace for young Cambodians to work towards financial independence by making high grade Cambodian souvenirs. In the beginning, there were only 3 workers, including the female Japanese founder, and the cookies were baked in a secondhand oven. They became popular due to their unique Angkor Wat shape, and the simple taste of Cambodian ingredients. The company has realized their initial goal, and now employs about 100 Cambodians.
Flavors of their cookies include coffee, wild honey, pineapple, banana, and cashew nuts kneaded into the original flavor – displaying the potential of Cambodian grown ingredients. The company is contributing to Cambodian society not just through employment, but also by purchasing the ingredients from producers.
