Street 60 (in Khmer: Phlauv hokseb) is known by the locals as the place to enjoy in the evening. It’s close to the Angkor Wat ticket offi ce, and is full of local fl avors – and many tourists with an interest in the bustling scene.

“Phlauv” means “street” and “hokseb” means “60”. Locals go here to enjoy local food carts and night stalls. About 5kms north east of town, this nightly market stretches for about 1km on both sides of the road.

The night market starts at the roundabout with the devata statue at the corner of Street 60 and Apsara Street. Along the side of the road from the west side, yakitori and fruit stalls can be found, followed by a shopping area, and then local food stalls.

The locals like to enjoy local food at the picnic-style area. As well as table seating, there are mats on the ground to enjoy relaxing in the cool evenings, a popular activity while enjoying local delicacies – which include Bank Chav (crepe like snack with minced meat and bean sprouts inside), Nom Krouk (similar to the Japanese snack, tako-yaki made with rice fl our), and Nom Bank Chouk (rice noodle).

The shopping is also enjoyable. Clothes, bedding, shoes, bags, daily necessities, watches, mobile phones, soft toys, and accessories are all for sale. Most seem to be cheaper than other city markets. You can see customers scrutinizing products, and ferocious bargaining with shop staff. It’s a scene that can be seen at other markets, but being in an open space and at night adds interest. It has a bit of a festival feel, but all year round.

Once just rice paddies and empty lots, lately there have been many developments such as hotels. While the tourists are heading back from ruins tours and over to pub street, after a hard day’s work it’s popular for the locals to head out with friends and family, over to Street 60. Nearby there are museums and Palm Container Market.
