Recently avocados have gained popularity in Cambodia, you can often find them at marketplaces and supermarkets.
Originating from South-Central Mexico, this fruit is very nutritious and said to be especially good for beautiful hair.
In Cambodia, pregnant women are advised to eat avocados to promote the baby’shair growth.
Rich and creamy avocado shakes are particularly popular.
Avocado is also used in foodrecipes such as the California roll; Japanese sushi that is popular overseas.
In the past avocados were imported from Vietnam, but now Cambodian farmers started planting avocado trees themselves.
Cambodian avocados are usually grown in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri provinces.
Mr. Bu Sopheap is the owner of an avocado farm in Mondulkiri and has been growing coffee,tea, lemons, pineapples, and avocados since 2012.
He says that it’s not difficult to take care of avocado trees and that they produce fruit after just two years.
The harvest season is from June to July.
Prices differ depending on big or small; from 6000riel per kilogram to 20,000riel per kilogram.
A fruit vender in Orussey market says that the best selling fruit in her store is avocado.
She sells 50kg per day in average and 12,000riel per kilogram and they are sold mostly to fruit shake vendors.
