Let’s go for a train ride!!
Let’s go for a train ride!!

Taking a train ride – it’s nothing special to most people in the developed world.

However in Cambodia,it’s a really special experience.

Cambodia did once have a network of trains – but the tracks and infrastructure were ruined by the civil war, so service was suspended to repair the facilities.

Passenger trains finally started again last year, and now run between Phnom Penh, Takeo, Kampot, and Sihanoukville, making a leisurely 7 hour trip. Trains run 3 days a week – from Friday to Sunday – and on public holidays.

The train departs at 7 am from Phnom Penh, arrives in Takeo at 9 am, Kampot at 12 pm and the last stop, Sihanoukville at 2 pm. Tickets cost 7 USD (VIP seating 8 USD) from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

The inside of the trains are unexpectedly comfortable, clean and with air-conditioning. Foreigners are also a common sight, making up about 40% of all passengers according to the train company.

Weekends are particularly popular with most seats being filled up on the 10 car trains.

The most attractive part of riding the Cambodian trains is the scenery out the window. Gazing out at the ever-changing idyllic landscape frees us from our everyday life.

It’s a luxurious ride for 7 USD one way. It’s nice to travel by train once and a while.

We highly recommend this experience!
