The Killing Field
The Killing Field
2017.09.06

We arrived after traveling for about 30 minutes by tuk-tuk from the city. This is the “killing field”.

Here rest the bones of many people who were murdered in the genocide that took place under the Pol Pot regime.

It is not uncommon to see those who know this history standing in shock or in tears before the memorial tower.

If you go around the grounds in accordance to the voice recording handed out at the entrance, you can hear stories from victims and the people who enacted the punishments during that time.

You can feel the fear from the speakers’ voices as they regale graphic stories. However if you look around the tower you will find many animals, dogs and birds, along with beautiful flowers.

You can feel the vitality of life that continues here.

In this setting you can pray for the happiness of the deceased and convey your own feelings like you would at your own family’s grave.

The “killing field” is a place where many Cambodians can feel their ancestors and may be feel a sense of gratitude as well.
